Nativity scene made of ice to raise awareness about climate change

18th December 2007

One of the typical symbols of Christmas is the Nativity scene, with Mary and Joseph, the baby Jesus in the manger, the donkey, the ox and the angel. It is not quite so common, however, for these figures to be made of ice. This is what Nice – Hielos Torné’s brand – has devised. This company has been producing ice for the fish sector for 50 years and aims to use ice for new and innovative purposes.

The company was commissioned by the Regional Government of Andalusia to make the ice nativity scene as part of a Christmas campaign to raise public awareness of the effects of climate change.
The nativity scene will be transported around the eight capital cities of the province of Andalusia on a refrigerated lorry. To keep it frozen, members of the public will have to help by pedalling on static bicycles, so as to generate the energy that is needed to stop the figures from melting.
