Introduction to the sector
The Central Flower Market began operating at Mercabarna on 7 April 1984. Before that, the Market had, since 1964, operated out of carrer Lleida in Barcelona, a space now occupied by the Lliure Theatre, building on a long commercial tradition of florists which began at the start of the 20th century in Les Rambles in Barcelona.
On 21 April 2001, a devastating fire completely destroyed the market's facilities at Mercabarna and for seven years the wholesale companies operated from a temporary building next to the old one.
The new flower market, called Mercabarna-flor, opened in 2008 on a plot of 44,000 m2 located outside the Mercabarna precinct in the municipal district of Sant Boi, next to El Prat Airport.
The centre has three different sales areas (flowers, plants and accessories) adapted to the needs of each product, as well as a flower arranging school, training rooms, rooms for creating flower arrangements and a restaurant-cafeteria, among other customer services.

Mercademostraciones
For more than 30 years Mercabarna, with the collaboration of the Mercabarna-flor Wholesalers' Business Association (AEM), has organised Mercademostraciones, a professional day where florists can discover the latest trends in flower arranging, especially designed for the Christmas season. Each year, the main Spanish flower arranging schools and the best flower arrangers from around the world meet at this event.
2025 Mercademostraciones
This is how we experienced the 41st edition of the Mercademostracions!
On Sunday, November 16, Mercabarna-flor was filled with color, music, and creativity to celebrate a day that has already become a benchmark for the floral sector. Under the theme "Flowers in rhythm. Floral art in harmony with the planet", we enjoyed a unique experience where flowers and music moved to the same beat.
The big novelty of this edition was the floral catwalk, an innovative format in which students from five floral art schools created arrangements live, inspired by songs, culminating in a final parade full of emotion and talent.
We also celebrated a new edition of the Mercabarna-flor National Floral Art Competition, with the collaboration of Accesorios Costablanca, where participating florists showcased their talent and creativity. The winner was Eva Arqués Coll, who stood out for her technique and artistic sensitivity.
As always, the five free workshops were a great success. In this edition, focused on innovative and sustainable techniques, they offered professionals practical resources and ideas to continue creating responsibly and with a respectful approach toward the environment. Thank you to all the professionals who made it possible! We’ll meet again on November 15, 2026 for the 42nd edition of the Mercademostracions.
