There is a growing trend among food distribution companies to offer customers produce from sustainable fisheries. For this reason, they are increasingly asking suppliers to prove they are certified as purveyors of such produce.
To inform Mercabarna’s fish sector businesses about the requirements and advantages of obtaining MSC sustainable fishery certification, on 24 October certification body DNV Business Assurance and agrofood consultancy TQM Consulting held a day-long symposium entitled “Certified Sustainable Fisheries, a Door to New Markets and Distribution".
The event set out the process a wholesale operator must follow to obtain and implement Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) accreditation. Companies which already hold the certificate and Spanish distributors that support sustainable fishery products also took part.
