For this reason, by order of Barcelona City Council and so as to continue its management of the Central Fruit and Vegetable and Fish Markets, Mercabarna has purchased the shares which, since its founding as a company, had been in the hands of the Meat Trade Foundation and the Barcelona Chamber of Agriculture.

These associations accounted for 0.04% of the shares of the company which is now completely publically owned by Barcelona Municipal Services (B:SM, a company whose single shareholder is Barcelona City Council), with 51% of the shares; the Mercasa national organisation, with 37%; and the Barcelonés Regional Council, with 12%.

Although the associations are no longer shareholders, given their link with Mercabarna activity, they will continue to take part through periodic agreements.
